The curriculum is divided into four quarters, and each quarter is roughly 8 weeks with 15-16 lessons in total.

Quarter 1 = Q1

Quarter 2 = Q2

Quarter 3 = Q3

Quarter 4 = Q4

For each quarter, there is a teacher guide and a student book. Thus, altogether there are 4 teacher guides and 4 student books. There are also 11-13 children’s books which are used in the curriculum and required. These may be borrowed from a library or purchased. The 32-week plan by quarter:

Quarter 1: Story Map Writing: Focus on Problem-Solution and on Cause-Effect (one paragraph).

Quarter 2: 4-Square Writing: Focus on Main Idea/Detail and on Persuasive Writing (introduces the five-paragraph essay).

Quarter 3: Story Map and 4-Square Writing: Focus on Character Trait and Compare/Contrast.

Quarter 4: Story Map and 4-Square Writing: Focus on writing a personal narrative, fiction story, friendly letter, and some more advanced topics such as an analysis of theme.
